Upon leaving Richard Chai’s Spring/Summer 2012 show, I had the urge to relinquish all responsibilities and board the first flight to Cabo San Lucas. Bright oranges, seafoam greens and cerulean blues in loose silhouettes had my head spinning with thoughts of white sand, clear skies and multiple margaritas.
The collection wasn’t overtly resort, however, as it included navy blues, greys and plums, keeping us grounded in our present reality. The blazers and cropped cigarette pants, seen on both women and men, could be sported by any young fashionista running around the city. Stripes, and florals, major themes for the upcoming season, were re-mastered in contrasting colors and innovative cuts. I personally favored the grey striped blazer with plum floral pants on her. A grey striped blazer on him paired with seafoam green cropped pants was a highlight, as well as the yellow striped dress for her which featured another major trend- cutouts. While some designers abuse this trend to the point of practically shredding the garment, Chai’s tasteful shoulder and chest bits were the perfect amount of peek-a-boo.
