nydailynews: Joseph Brooks, the Oscar-winning composer of “You Light Up My Life” who was awaiting trial for rape while his son faced a murder trial, killed himself Sunday in his Upper East Side apartment.
Brooks, 73, was found dead with a plastic dry cleaning bag over his head and a towel wrapped around his head and neck near a hose attached to a tank of helium gas.
Mr Brooks was found by a friend at 12.30pm today by a friend of his whom he had scheduled lunch with. It was also retorted a suicide note was also left- its contents to date unreleased.
The figure of much conjecture, who on one hand had bestowed a generation with the 1970’s hit- ‘You light up my life,’ to the vivid accusations that his public image was marred by a Dr Jekyl and Hyde persona where he stood accused of raping 11 young actresses, whom it was claimed he had lure to his apartment with the promise of movie roles.
One could also wonder as a consequence of his own son Nicholas Brooks awaiting trial on charges of murder of fashion designer Sylvie Cachay and his own imminent trials was too much for a man who one supposes in the end could barely come to terms with his duplicitous Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde disposition and the rotting of the family tree. Such may be the lot of some of the most talented and afflicted amongst us.
