– “martinets”: little black birds that fly at 90 degree angles like flies and bats, more or less. Or perhaps I lie, maybe they are just little black birds that fly in normal aerodynamic curves, I never said I had any special ornithological knowledge: they fly and I don’t, that’s enough. (finally bothered to look: they are whips)

“pastis”: you should know this.

– “papillonner”
: literally to butterfly, or to mindlessly saunter from thing to thing without commitment or purpose, the very essence of dilettantism.

Well, it seems the very definition of terms sort of sets a parameter for our lesson. How do we actively work on maximizing enjoyment without killing it by the very willfulness of the endeavor? We all know the tourism-stakhanovites that plan their visit three weeks before getting to the airport and don’t we know it’s about as detrimental to life’s magic as the methodical, dutiful lover is to sex? Aren’t the best evenings/companions/livelihoods the ones we stumble upon? As much as we would like to think of ourselves that way, have we really got the sensitivity of a scorched spirit or such an intimacy with the old, infamous void that we really can superimpose happiness with its own awareness? Or was Cioran simply wrong? That’s more likely. Scorched and helpless as we are, better pick our pleasure where we first find it and enjoy that – at least till the sun sets.

After that, you’ll find me at the bull fights, where the men scurry and the men chant, where a creature with horns gets to have its revenge.

Don’t be silly, there is some pleasure to be had in Manhattan too, and if you fail to find it, you can always live it vicariously through S&V’s devoted mischief-scavenging gangsters, that’s what they’re here for; I’ll be back soon enough…

Till then,

Your imaginary friend,
Siggy.
