But with this camaraderie came a feeling of barely contained chaos. As though there was also a collective desire to wreak havoc bubbling just beneath the surface. Skillful PR people and handlers struggled to keep it under wraps but the longer the show was delayed the harder it became. By 9:45 (the show was supposed to start at 9) there were loud boos, stomping, and broken glass. Dimming the lights did not help, especially after we’d sat in the dark for 15 minutes. Still no Pamela, so still no show. How fitting that celebrity bullshit should interfere with an environment that had finally shaken it.

Of course, when Pam did arrive, the mood switched .It was playful again. Confetti streamed from the ceiling, along with balloons and fake money.  But while the crowd may have been excited, the staff remained unimpressed. All evening, women in schoolgirl uniforms passed out multicolored drinks and these waitresses were totally unfazed by the hoopla around them. A man who looked like the sparkly lovechild of Carmen Miranda and Fred Flintstone elicited hardly a glance. Some were even a little abashed to be a part of this nonsense. “This is my embarrassment,” said an employee in overalls as he sprinkled rainbow confetti all over the runway. “Ooh!” said a partygoer wearing a princess tiara over a fur hat: “confetti!”
