Tyler Brown, Cambridge shooter in Massachusetts previously arrested for attempted murder of cops is released after 5-6 years only to strike again. Shooter was previously on probation for 2014 felony assault when he made early parole.

A gunman suspect who opened fire along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Monday was involved in a previous shootout with Boston police nearly six years ago.

Tyler Brown, 46, was taken into custody after firing off between 50 and 60 shots with an assault style rifle, leading to two men inside their cars being struck and seriously wounded. Police said the two men have life-threatening injuries.

Suicidal threats leads to showdown along Memorial Drive

Upon cops descending on the scene, Brown was shot and wounded by a State Trooper and a civilian, a former Marine, before being taken into custody.

It all started circa 12:30 Monday afternoon, when Boston Police officers attempted to do a wellbeing check at his home in Dorchester after Brown’s parole officer reported to police he’d made suicidal statements according to CBS News.

He was also allegedly seen on Facetime video with an assault rifle and said he would use it. Brown was recorded by witnesses on Memorial Drive walking down the middle street, terrorizing drivers and waving and shooting a long gun. Witnesses said he shot at cars and in the air, before he was shot and taken into custody.

How did Cambridge shooter get out in only 5-6 years?

The incident comes after Brown opening fire on Boston police officers in May 2020 and pleaded guilty to attempted murder in 2021.

Prosecutors said Brown let off 13 rounds at officers who responded to a 911 call about a man with a gun.

At the time of the 2020 incident, Brown was on probation for a 2014 conviction relating to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as witness intimidation, WCVB reported.

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins asked then Suffolk Superior Court Judge Janet Sanders to imprison Brown between 10 to 12 years, with five years of probation to follow.

But Brown was only handed 5 to 6 years behind bars for the attempted murder charge by Judge Sanders. He was released after just a few years.

One of the officers involved in that 2020 attack wrote in a victim impact statement saying: ‘I am a firm believer that when Mr. Tyler Brown gets out, he will hurt, or worse, kill someone,’ the officer said. ‘Probation apparently means nothing to Mr. Tyler Brown, nor does the value of life.’

Social media responds to early release and repeat shooting spree

News of Brown’s prior reduced sentence led to uproar on social media.

Posted one commentator: ‘Judges that release violent criminals like this should be held accountable if they were to kill/hurt again. Would literally stop everything.’

Wrote another: ‘Attempted to murder cops and only in prison for 6 years? If you try to kill someone, whether you succeed or not, that should be it for you.’

Lamented another: ‘How are we so soft on criminals that attempted murder on a cop is only 5-6 years? This is pure insanity. It’s not fair we have to live with these monsters among us.’

According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Brown is currently in hospital in intensive care.
