Corey Kenny & teen daughter, Stacey‑Lynn Kenny killed after colliding with moose while riding motorcycle in Newfoundland’s Southern Shore as Aquaforte community accuses government of failing to take action along highway in repeat incidents.
A local Canada community are mourning the loss of a father and daughter after the motorcycle they were riding on earlier this week collided with a moose and another vehicle.
Corey Kenny, 48, and his 19‑year‑old daughter, Stacey‑Lynn Kenny were traveling along Newfoundland’s Southern Shore along Route 10 Monday night when the tragedy unfolded.
Avalon East District RCMP said officers responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. June 22 to a crash involving a motorcycle, a passenger vehicle and a moose near Aquaforte.
Tragedy follows near repeat incidents along Canada highway
The driver and passenger of the motorcycle, a 48-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the passenger vehicle was assessed by paramedics, and did not require further treatment.
Of note, Stacey-Lynn was a hockey player with the Southern Shore Breakers.
A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended to assist with the investigation, and a section of Route 10 in Aquaforte was closed overnight while officers examined the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) was also engaged.
Aquaforte town manager Aaron Croft says this week’s tragedy follows a fatal moose-vehicle collision in the community a few years ago.
He says moose sightings on that stretch of road are constant, and daily reports of near-misses becoming routine according to VOCM.
Lack of government action criticized
In the aftermath of the tragedy Family and friends of the father and daughter mourned the loss with former school pals posting:
‘We are inviting the Mobile Central High school community to display or hang a Mobile Central High jersey, hockey stick, MCHS clothing, or any other sports memorabilia you may have on your front door or porch this evening in the memory of Stacey Lynn and Corey.
‘Our thoughts are with the Kenny family and their many friends within Mobile Central High family and our broader community during this difficult time.’
The tragedy has since led to The Town of Aquaforte criticizing a lack of action on the part of the government regarding brush cutting following Monday’s fatal highway crash.
Aaron Croft described the lack of action on the part of government ‘amounting to nothing short of negligence.’
Authorities had yet to say what causd what is thoght to be a freak accident as they continue to investigate.
