Uber Eats driver working 2 jobs killed making final evening delivery

An Illinois man who was working two jobs — one at Amazon, the other as an Uber Eats driver was found dead after making his final late-night delivery for the food app provider

Daniel Figueroa, 28, of Downers Grove, had finished working a shift at Amazon on Sunday before starting a late-night shift as an Uber Eats driver according to the man’s girlfriend, the mother of a young boy, who Figuerora had planned to marry and become the father to her young son. 

Final fateful delivery of the night to Loretto Hospital

After Figueroa dropped off a food delivery at Loretto Hospital in Chicago at 2 a.m. on Monday, he was found unresponsive outside, and his van was missing.

Chicago police officers responded to the 5500 block of West Flournoy Street in the Austin neighborhood around 2:05 a.m. after he was found lying in the street.

Figueroa was brought to another hospital, where he died. Police said they were investigating his death as a homicide, ABC7Chicago.

‘I didn’t get no texts or no call from him until his mom reached out to me at 7 in the morning saying, you know, he had passed away,’ Daniel Figueroa’s girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero told the outlet.

Person of interest taken into custody, van recovered

While no suspects have been named, police announced on Tuesday that a female person of interest was in custody along with his van recovered. Police believe leading up to Figueroa’s death, the app driver may have been carjacked by two men and a woman, WGN reported.

Police said Figueroa had completed his delivery, and the doctor who made the order was able to track his movements as he approached the hospital. When the doctor went to get his food, he saw Figueroa lying on the ground.

Police said surveillance cameras captured Figueroa trying to stop three people from taking his van. According to the police, he was dragged for half a block before the van sped away.

Victim’s father speaks of heart-break

Figueroa’s father told WGN that his son’s delivery at Loretta Hospital was his final drop-off of the night. He told WGN, ‘He was on his way home. This was going to be his last stop.’

Added the father, ‘He was my youngest son, and now I have to bury him because someone decided to take his life.’

‘I hope my son didn’t suffer,’ Carlos Figueroa said. ‘He didn’t deserve this. Not one bit. He was a good kid.’

Figueroa and his girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero stated that the couple were planning to celebrate her young son’s birthday on Monday.

In a GoFundMe page she started to raise money for funeral expenses and bills, she said Figueroa was the main source of financial support for her and her son, whom he treated like his own.

Authorities have not released a cause of death for Figueroa. The homicide investigation is ongoing. Both Loretto Hospital and Uber provided comments to the press stating that they were cooperating with law enforcement.
