Ex husband of Monique Tepe charged with murder of Columbus OH dentist & wife

Dr. Michael David McKee Illinois surgeon arrested in murder of Monique and Spencer Tepe, Columbus, Ohio dentist and wife at couple’s Weinland Park home. Suspect according to family members identified as the former husband of Monique Tepe married from 2015-2017. 

The former husband of Monique Tepe, who along with her husband who were slain at their Columbus, Ohio apartment last month has been arrested and charged in the couple’s murders.

Michael David McKee, 39, who is now in custody now faces two charges of first degree murder according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Ex husband pleads not guilty in court as FBI agent cites motive in Weinland Park killing

Michael McKee of Chicago, Rockford, Illinois accused of shooting and killing Spencer and Monique Tepe in their Weinland Park home on Dec. 30. McKee was confirmed to be Monique Tepe’s ex-husband family member confirmed to ABC 6 on Saturday.

The suspect’s arrest follows the Columbus Police Homicide Unit identifying the suspect throught neighborhood surveillance. A  vehicle was found in Rockford, Illinois, with evidence linking McKee to it following the homicides.

According to court documents cited by the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus detectives identified a vehicle that had been in the area of the Tepe home shortly before the couple is believed to have been killed and leaving shortly after. Court records say detectives tracked that vehicle down, locating it in Rockford, Illinois, and identified that McKee owned the vehicle.

Columbus police officers discovered the Tepes in their home on North Fourth Street on Dec. 30 suffering multiple gunshot wounds after responding to a wellness check for Spencer Tepe, who failed to show up at the dentistry practice where he worked in Athens.

The couple’s two young children, ages 4 and 1, were found at the residence unharmed.

Dr. Michael David McKee & ex wife Monique Sabaturski doomed marriage

On Jan. 5, police released security camera footage from an alley near the Tepe home showing a person walking during the 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. window on Dec. 30 during which detectives believed the Tepes were killed during.

There did not appear to be any signs of forced entry and no obvious signs of a robbery, according to information provided publicly by authorities.

Spencer, a dentist, and Monique, a stay-at-home mom, were described as loving parents to their two young children. A private memorial service is scheduled to take place Sunday.

The Tepes were married in 2021 and were one month shy of celebrating their five-year wedding anniversary.

Medical licensure databases show McKee went to medical school at Ohio State University. He has active licenses as a vascular surgeon in Illinois and California.

He had a license in Nevada which lapsed in mid-2025. Clark County (Nevada) court records show McKee is one of several doctors who were named in an ongoing personal injury lawsuit.

McKee’s medical license shows no disciplinary history in any of the states where he has practiced.

Monique Tepe who married suspect in 2015 filed for divorce two years later in 2017

McKee and Monique Tepe, who was Monique Sabaturski at the time, married in August 2015, according to Franklin County Domestic Court records.

Monique filed for divorce in May 2017, according to court records. McKee was listed as living in Virginia at the time, where he appears to have been attending a surgical residency program.

Court records show the couple were separated at the time of the divorce, which was finalized about a month later. There is no indication in court records that there was any animosity between the couple. They did not share any children.

Family members release statement following arrest

Rob Misleh, Spencer Tepe’s brother-in-law, released a family statement to ABC 6, reading:

‘Today’s arrest represents an important step toward justice for Monique and Spencer. Nothing can undo the devastating loss of two lives taken too soon, but we are grateful to the City of Columbus Police Department, its investigators, and assisting law enforcement community whose tireless efforts helped to capture the person involved.

‘We thank the community for the continued support, prayers, and compassion shown throughout this tragedy. As the case proceeds, we trust the justice system to hold the person responsible fully accountable.

‘Monique and Spencer remain at the center of our hearts, and we carry forward their love as we surround and protect the two children they leave behind. We will continue to honor their lives and the light they brought into this world.’

CPD Sgt. James Fuqua confirmed Saturday that an official media release will be released within the next hour.

Michael David McKee is currently in custody at the Winnebago County Jail in Rockford, Illinois according to arrest records. McKee is scheduled for a hearing on Jan. 12, likely an extradition hearing, to start the process of his return to Ohio to face charges.

Of note, McKee has no prior criminal record outside of traffic tickets. At one time, McKee had a hunting license in Ohio, but it is unclear if that license remains active or valid.

Authorities to date have yet to share a known motive into the murder of the Weinland Park couple.
