Nascar driver & family killed in Statesville plane crash as wife made tragic final post

Tragedy comes after plane tried to make emergency landing on runway moments after take off.

The wife of NASCAR driver Greg Biffle posted about her hopes for the future just moments before the couple and their two children being killed in a fiery plane crash, Thursday morning in North Carolina. 

Cristina Grossu, Biffle’s wife, reposted an Instagram story about being optimistic moments before she, Biffle, 55, and their two children died.

Nearly 24 hours before the fatal crash, Cristina posted a picture in the car on her Instagram story with the caption: ‘Busy day today.’ 

She then shared a picture of Martha Stewart with an inspirational statement on it. 

Grossu was aboard the small jet with the NASCAR driver and their daughter, Emma, and son, Ryder, when the jet went down in flames.

At 10 am, just 15 minutes before the crash, Grossu posted a story about Martha Stewart’s late-in-life success.

The post, originally shared by the account BossBabe, describes how Stewart rose to fame.

“At 30, Martha Stewart hadn’t started a business,” it began.

“At 35, she launched her catering company.

“At 58, she became a billionaire.”

The caption to the post reads: ‘These stories are your reminder that you’re not behind…you’re right on time.’

Family friend confirm family’s death

The death of Greg Biffle and his family was shared by the Biffle’s family friend Cleetus McFarland.

‘Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane…because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us,’ McFarland posted on Facebook.

“We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this.”

The family was aboard a Cessna C550 headed towards Sarasota, Florida, after taking off from Statesville Regional Airport, about an hour outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, according to Flight Aware.

The plane was registered to Biffle and owned by GB Aviation Leasing, according to public records.

According to flight tracking data the aircraft made a return to the airport shortly after take off. It remained unclear what led to the pilot seeking to return to the airport. Initial reports indicated the plane experiencing engine problems forcing the pilot to return. 

Nascar driver and wife were power couple who shared life on social media

The plane was seen engulfed in flames as emergency crews rushed to the terrifying scene, about 45 minutes from Charlotte.

According to the city of Statesville’s website, the airport is city-owned and provides corporate aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams.

Witnesses who were at nearby Lakewood Golf Club said the plane was flying ‘way to low’ before it crashed. 

Statesville Regional Airport said in a statement: ‘We can confirm there has been an aircraft incident at the Statesville Regional Airport.

‘At approximately 10:15am, an aircraft crashed while landing. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is en route and will investigate the incident.’

Dizzy ascent of Nascar driver and wife and tragic end

Biffle began his NASCAR career in 1995. He was one of just three drivers ever to win a championship in both the Busch Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. He was also named the 2001 Rookie of the Year in the NASCAR Busch Series before going on to becoming the 2002 champion. Biffle won 19 races from 2003 to 2016.

Biffle made headlines last year for flying the plane around The Tar Heel State, rescuing stranded citizens, and running emergency relief during Hurricane Helene.

The former NASCAR driver, is married to Cristina Grossu with the couple wedding in January 2023 in the Bahamas after getting engaged in 2021 and share a son, Ryder Jack, born in 2020. Biffle also shares daughter Emma, 14, with ex-wife Nicole Lunders.

“Here’s your reminder that Life has a way of reminding you not to take a single moment for granted,” Cristina wrote via Instagram in June alongside a photo of her and Ryder at the beach.

Greg and Cristina were married on New Year’s Eve 2022 on Pearl Island in the Bahamas.

‘We’re just getting started. 😍💍,’ Cristina wrote via Instagram in March 2023, sharing a video of wedding highlights.

A graduate from USC with an MBA from Purdue University, Cristina describes herself as a ‘serial entrepreneur since the young age of 12,’ according to her author biography on Amazon. She began flipping thrift-store finds as a preteen and eventually founded My Replica Ring.

Cristina was also a successful realtor, businesswoman, and mom who also co-pilots adventures and supports her husband’s ventures, with the couple often seen together at events and on social media.

Not immediately clear is who was piloting the doomed plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
