Crimea Baker and Sean Lange shot dead in hail of bullets at New Market, Maryland home as four children hid for five and a half hours before calling police after 42 gunshots were fired.
A Maryland couple were gunned down in a hail of bullets Sunday morning as they laid in bed with no less than 42 spent shell casings discovered in what authorities called ‘a crime of rage and anger.’
The children of 33-year-old woman, Crimea Malita Baker, all under the age of 13, were at the New Market home at the time of the shooting, surviving the onslaught as they hid for hours, according to Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, WJLA reported.
‘Based on the conversations with the children, it happened about 1:30 in the morning and we believe, based on what the children told us, they hid in the house until morning until they felt safe, to try to figure out what had happened,’ Jenkins said during a Tuesday press conference. ‘I can’t imagine what’s going through their minds. One of the children discovered his mother and the gentleman in the bed, dead, at the time. I can only say their lives are destroyed, is upside-down right now.’
No known motive
The children waited for five and half hours before feeling confident enough to call authorities circa 7 a.m., the official said.
Authorities said Baker shared one of the children with 34-year-old Sean Antoine Lange, the other victim in the double murder. None of the children were physically harmed, and they are now being tended to by social services.
The children are 11, 10, 9, and 7-months, according to an online fundraiser set up to help keep the children together.
‘This was really a heinous, targeted double murder, a crime of rage and anger. This is the type of crime that shocks the conscience of everyone in Frederick County,’ Jenkins said.
No suspects or arrests
Jenkins did not describe the weapon used but said the spent shell casings were all .40 caliber with both victims shot at close range.
The sheriff said multiple agencies are investigating and so far have not identified a suspect.
Not immediately clear is how and why Baker and Lange came to be targeted.
