Overkill? A 17-year-old senior has been expelled from her Christian high school in North Carolina after taking exception to the musician performing at nightclubs and bars.

Baily Griggs says she was kicked out of Cramerton Christian Academy in GastoniaNorth Carolina, before her senior year because of her presence at places where ‘drugs and alcohol are present,’ such as ‘nightclubs or bars.’

The school reportedly informed her mom Jennifer Griggs of the decision via email.

Moral hypocrisy?

‘When you look at the handbook and the way it’s written, it says that she’s not to be gathering in places where there’s alcohol and drugs,’ Jennifer told WRAL News.

‘She’s not gathering, she’s doing her job,’ the parent told the outlet.

Baily claims attending the venues is part of her musical career, and that she does not drink when she attends the venues as she is underage.

Jennifer said she received no warning from the school before the school expelled Bailey, which is why she believes the school singled her daughter out.

The parent pointed to many of the school’s students posting images attending concerts where there is alcohol and have not been expelled.

‘The other kids in the schools, there’s post, many, many posts of them attending music concerts,’ Jennifer said.

‘If anyone knows, when you go to those concerts, you’re surrounded by alcohol.’

Does Jesus discriminate?

Moreover, Jennifer argued that many restaurants also serve alcohol. Never mind students who may also work as waiters at restaurants that serve alcohol — which is to wonder how is singing in front of attendees drinking versus taking drink orders any different or susceptible to a devaluation of moral upkeep?

Cramerton Christian Academy, however, has stood by its decision, saying they have very high standards and does not enroll students who do not meet them.

Baily has been performing since the age of 10 and was discovered by Dolly Parton’s producer Kent Wells according to the dailymail

She had been homeschooled while enrolled at Cramerton but enrolled in the homeschool bridge program, which allowed her to participate in school sports and other activities.

According to the Gaston Gazette, Baily was the captain of the cheerleading team and an active member at the school’s church.

Baily and her mother say they are not asking the school to change their decision, but they believe the rules should apply to everyone.

‘Yeah, rules are rules, but make sure you’re making everybody abide by those rules. Not just some people,’ Baily told WRAL.

Bailey said while the situation is tough for her, her music helps her push through.

‘A lot of people have reached out and said they still support me and that I should still follow my dreams,’ she said.

Baily is now looking into other homeschool programs and plans on continuing performing as she works towards her diploma
