Sadie Mauro Dover Sherborn teen lacrosse star killed in Cape Cod boat crash after vessel slamming into jetty and throwing her overboard. 

Just an accident? A standout teen lacrosse player, has been identified as the 17-year-old girl who was killed Friday night after a boat off Cape Cod collided into a jetty, sending her overboard. 

Sadie Mauro was thrown into water as a boat with six people on board, smashed into a jetty at Sesuit Harbor in Dennis at around 9pm on Friday, Massachusetts State Police said.

The teen’s body was recovered off Cold Storage Beach around 11:30 pm after a multi-agency search, WCVB reported.

Teen lacrosse star remembered 

Injuries were recorded amongst the party of six, with a male taken to hospital with a head laceration. 

Investigators had yet to say what caused the crash, or whether any charges were forthcoming. 

Mauro’s Principal at Dover Sherborn High School described the young woman as ‘genuine and effortlessly kind.’

‘Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit,’ Principal John Smith wrote in a letter to parents Saturday. 

‘She had such a strong sense of self and had a love for adventure and anything outdoors,’ he said, adding, ‘a hardworking student and great athlete, Sadie was genuine and effortlessly kind.’

What caused fatal boat crash? 

Mauro excelled at lacrosse as a midfielder, competing at the State Championship last month. 

The high schooler wrote about her ambitions to play lacrosse at college on her recruitment page, stating: ‘I can’t wait to continue my athletic and academic career collegiately!’ 

The Coast Guard, the state Environmental Police, the Barnstable County Dive Team and the Sandwich Fire marine launched a joint search after reports of a missing person emerged after the crash on Friday evening.

A State Police marine unit and underwater recovery unit, along with Massachusetts Environmental Police marine assets, also conducted dive operations at the crash site Saturday in an attempt to recover debris from the boat according to the Daily Mail.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the vessel was equipped with two outboard 250-horsepower engines bearing an Alabama registration, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.

A gathering will be held at the school library for middle and high school students on  Monday from 10am to noon according to school officials. 

Offered Dover-Sherborn Public Schools Superintendent Beth McCoy: ‘The Dover-Sherborn community is strong and is known for its strength and resiliency in the face of unimaginable tragedy. 

‘We will continue to support each other in the days and weeks ahead as we surround Sadie’s family, friends and loved ones with care and love. I will be hugging my children extra tight this evening – I am sure you will do the same’.

To date investigators have yet to say what speed the boat was traveling or whether alcohol or other substances were involved.
