A newlywed California man drowned while on his honeymoon with his wife in Hawaii — only for thieves to then steal the couple’s belongings on the beach along with their rental car.
Steven Phan a Bay Area, California man and his wife Brittany were in Honolulu on June 1 when Phan went beneath the surf while the newly wed couple were snorkeling off Electric Beach.
A spear fisherman pulled him to shore and bystanders began CPR before first responders arrived, KTIV reported. Phan was transported to a hospital where he later died.
Electric Beach extremely popular with locals
The newlywed couple had been married for just three months, according to a fundraiser for- the couple.
‘As If this could not be worse, all of Brittany and Steven’s belongings were stolen, the thieves took their cell phones, wallets, money, clothing, they even stole their car rental,’ according to the GoFundme page.
Teresa Kling, an employee from Aaron’s Dive Shop on Oahu, released a statement describing the beach where the theft happened.
“Electric Beach is extremely popular with locals and has become a popular spot for tourists. Everything depends on the conditions and the day. It tends to be a great spot for beginners,” Kling said.

Newlywed couple were met less than 3 months ago when tragedy stuck
Honolulu plans to place a new lifeguard stand at the beach following public outcry for more responders on the city’s beaches, according to KITV.
‘We are all shocked, in disbelief, and heartbroken at the loss of such a great man as Steven,’ the GoFundMe page states. ‘Steven always found a way to be a part of everyone’s lives, no matter the distance. Steven was a true friend and an amazing husband, Steven will be incredibly missed by all.’
A friend told KRON in San Francisco that Phan worked at Apple in Cupertino. He and his wife, Brittany Myers Phan, were married March 20.
Honolulu police continue to investigating the theft and auto theft. To date no arrests have been made.
