5 Black pride apparel brands to watch out for in 2023: great fashion options that support people of color, LGBTQIA, women-owned businesses, small businesses, and more.

As we start the new year, many of us are looking for more ways to support our communities. Here at Blackmerch, we are proud of our Black heritage and culture. In fact, it is the heart of what we do. We also support our community, however, by supporting and networking with other Black-owned businesses, including apparel brands.

From emerging brands to those worn by celebrities – there are great fashion options that support people of color, LGBTQIA, women-owned businesses, small businesses, and more. Sometimes it is hard to identify these brands from larger retailers, which is why we have compiled the list below!

5 Black Owned Apparel Brands to Wear in 2023

Put together by Blackmerch, a Black pride apparel brand, check out our list of 5 brands you will love to wear in 2023.

   1. Fanm Mon

Fanm Mon is a Black-owned apparel brand that marries Haitian heritage and culture with the artisanal techniques of the Ukraine. The name, Fanm Mon, means a woman, or a nurturer, who embraces nature. It is this ideal that carries through the stunning designs offered by the brand. Based in Turkey, this brand features incredible craftsmanship that is feminine and comfortable. All pieces are handcrafted using as many recycled materials as possible. The brand uses ethical and sustainable manufacturing processes as well.

   2. Savage X Fenty

We can’t talk about Black-owned apparel brands without giving a shout out to Rihanna and her lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty. Rihanna’s clothing brand has become one of the most successful Black-owned apparel brands in history. Offering a wide selection of clothing for all body types, shapes, and sizes, this is a lingerie brand that anyone can comfortably and confidently wear. Best known as a lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty also offers loungewear, sportswear, and even a selection of men’s items.

   3. Yam

Part of any style and clothing collection is the right accessories. For perfect pairings for your wardrobe, turn to Yam, a Black-owned brand offering handmade jewelry and accessories. Yam offers a stunning collection of jewelry including silver, gold, pearls, and floral accessories. Based in New York City, the founder, Morgan Thomas, has been making jewelry since she was a child. Her style incorporates hardware and vintage styles with modern style.

   4. Zelie for She

Zelie for She is a Black-owned clothing brand offering limited run collections designed by Elann Zelie in Los Angeles, California. This brand was created with the woman in mind as goddesses and unique in all shapes and sizes. What we love about Zelie for She is that the brand embraces the female form and offers a nice selection of clothing fit for curvy and plus size women – something that is lacking in the fashion industry at large.

   5. Zou Xou

If you are a shoe lover, then you have to check out the amazing styles at Zou Xou. Zou Xou was created by designer Katherine Theobalds, who after a stint designing in NYC decided to take her style and ethics to a new brand, and Zou Xou was born. What is great about this brand is that the styles are both sensible (i.e. comfortable) and stylish. All of the shoes are made on-demand in Argentina. The small batch service provides a more ethical and sustainable approach to manufacturing. What’s even more impressive is that the team of crafters are local artisans who set their own hours and negotiate their wages.

The five Black-owned apparel brands we discuss above are among our favorites because the designers have a heart for supporting the Black community and other minorities.
