Over the weekend, the Uganda Anti- Homosexuality bill, otherwise known as the ‘Kill the Gays bill,’  was passed.

Local media sources went on to tell one of the highlights of the bill is that instead of mandating death to those individuals believed to be partaking in same sex practices, they are to now be imprisoned for life.

The approved text must now be given the green light by President Yoweri Museveni, a devout evangelical Christian.

Wikipedia tells the the legislative proposal would broaden the criminalization of same-sex relations in Uganda domestically, and further includes provisions for Ugandans who engage in same-sex relations outside of Uganda, asserting that they may be extradited for punishment back to Uganda, and includes penalties for individuals, companies, media organizations, or non-governmental organisations that know of gay people or support LGBT rights.

The bill would make it illegal to ‘promote’ homosexuality and will also jail anyone who does not report homosexual activities to the police.

Told the lawmaker behind the bill, David Bahati: “This is a victory for Uganda. I am glad the parliament has voted against evil,”

“Because we are a God-fearing nation, we value life in a holistic way. It is because of those values that members of parliament passed this bill regardless of what the outside world thinks.”

First proposed in 2009, the bill had been shelved following international condemnation, but parliamentary spokeswoman Hellen Kaweesa said the changes meant it had secured “majority support” among MPs.

“Now anybody found practising, recruiting for or publicising homosexuality commits a felony, said Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity Simon Lokodo.

“President Museveni should avoid the trap of scapegoating a vulnerable minority in the interests of short-term political gain,” said Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “He should recognize that this repugnant bill is of no benefit to Ugandans – that it only serves to jeopardize basic rights – and reject it.”

Jonathan Lalley, assistant press secretary for national security at the White House said in a statement: ‘We are deeply concerned by the Ugandan Parliament’s passage of anti-homosexuality legislation.

‘As Americans, we believe that people everywhere deserve to live in freedom and equality – and that no one should face violence or discrimination for who they are or who they love.

‘We join those in Uganda and around the world who appeal for respect for the human rights of LGBT persons and of all persons.’

Homophobia is widespread in Uganda, where American-style evangelical Christianity is on the rise. Gay men and women in the country face frequent harassment and threats of violence, and rights activists have also reported cases of lesbians being subjected to “corrective” rapes.

The ratification of the new bill comes after a universal law criminalizing LGBT advocacy and rights passed the Nigerian senate paving the way to soon move on to the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan (right).

And then there were these comments on the web that made me wonder as well:

Considering how the people of Africa have suffered under persecution and discrimination due to something they have no control over, it is really sad to see how gleefully they join in persecuting others (who also have no choice as to who they are). It seems like ‘ubuntu’ is just a useless word afterall 🙁

Uganda is nothing more than a impoverished hell hole that should be focused on feeding their people and stop obsessing over arresting innocent people whos only crime is that they were born different from those in power.

Shame on you Uganda!

imagine if they say all straight people should go to jail for being straight… all albinos should be killed… Rastafarianism is unacceptable… polygamy should be abolished… ancestors don’t exist… the list is endless
