A female surfer and nearby kayakers are lucky to be alive after a pair of humpback whales unexpectantly leaped out of the water with their mouths wide open.

The incident happened off Santa Cruz in California and was captured by a nearby swimmer on video.

In this instance the whales the size of school buses had come up to snack on the school of anchovies wading close to shore.

Reflects Barbara Roettger who shot the video:

‘We were crazy to be out there, you’re a sitting duck basically.’

This off the back of US Coast guard warnings that there had been numerous sightings of whales unseasonably close to shore.
