As the first-of-its-kind Indian foodie event in New York City, the Varli Food Festival showcased the culinary creations from over 35 of the finest restaurants that focus on Indian cuisine. Promoting awareness of Indian cuisine and culture, the elegantly designed sold-out event – produced by VARLI Magazine– featured food and drink tastings and cooking demonstrations, and an exclusive performance by celebrated Indian songstress Tina Sugandh. Featured participating chefs included Vikas Khanna (author, The Spice Story of India, Modern Indian Cooking and Flavors First, Founder of Cooking for Life and SAKIV Organizations), Jehangir Mehta (Food Network’s Iron Chef America, The Next Iron Chef, author, Mantra the Rules of Indulgence), Floyd Cardoz (formerly of Tabla Restaurant, author, One Spice, Two Spice) and Hemant Mathur (PBS’ How To Cook Everything: Bittman Takes On America’s Chefs, Food Trip with Todd English, Travel Channel’s Epicurious TV).
Guests were treated to various signature dish samples from local Indian restaurants, including Tamarind, Devi, Junoon, Tulsi and Chola, just to name a few. Displaying first-hand the unique art of Indian cooking, celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor captivated guests in an on-stage cooking show during which he also answered questions from the audience. In tandem with the event’s objective to bring Indian cuisine and culture to the forefront of mainstream consciousness, guests were invited to browse the Festival’s special Spice Market, where they received an exclusive Varli Food Festival tote bag and selected various Indian spices, chutneys, rice, flour, juices, teas and snacks to bring home.
