Aren’t you happy we’re still winning this relentless war?

huffingtonpost: KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — More than 400 inmates – many of them Taliban insurgents – escaped from the main prison in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar overnight through an underground tunnel, an official said Monday.

The massive jailbreak in Kandahar, the focus of much of the international military effort to defeat the insurgency, is a reminder that the Afghan government is still weak and easily thwarted in the south, despite an influx of international troops, funding and advisers.

Can we wonder for a moment if the outbreaks serves as a wider metaphor for what’s really going on here? For all the money, artillery, drone missions, intelligence, counter intelligence, deal making, purported advances, ideological shifts and sentiments how is it that you can have a group of people who are suppose to be ass backwards and evil that we have to (re) train to see the world ‘our’ way managing to out goose the heavy duty goose?

Does anyone really realize who they are dealing with and why after all these years the Taliban is still able to out-run the gamut?

The escape comes after years of security upgrades and tightened procedures at the 1,200-inmate Sarposa Prison following a brazen 2008 Taliban attack that freed 900 prisoners.

On Sunday night, about 476 prisoners streamed out of a tunnel dug between the prison and the outside and disappeared into Kandahar city, prison supervisor Ghulam Dastagir Mayar said. He said many of the missing were Taliban militants.

One has to be impressed with the degree of ingenuity over this breakout, one only wishes that the occupying forces take note of the fact that this is beyond an ideological war, a war on militants – but a war of mental wits that will always find the zest to outmanouever you even when you think you’ve got the front lock key stitched in your wallet. Assuming you don’t drop the wallet on the way to the potty…

  1. Major Major would have considered this a major ‘black eye’. Maybe it was another Minderbender Enterprise production.
