Just Dance: Healing for Haiti.

The two ballet standards were made all the more interesting when viewed in contrast with the other performances. Punctuating the classically orchestrated pieces were dances that would likely get some serious viral attention if they were to hit YouTube. Three women writhed in sync on the floor to the beat of pounding techno. A solitary female cloaked in a tube of fabric moved with extreme precision to create shapes and forms that sometimes invoked oppression, sometimes sexuality. Two pairs of very young looking dancers moved in unison like an alien species showing us earthlings how real grace and stiffness can work together.

The night’s true showstopper was the last performance. A solitary man, Sean Suozzi of the New York City Ballet Company, took the completely dark stage. A large white sheet hung behind him. Suddenly light appeared as if from nowhere. The ten minute performance was entirely lit by two small but powerful bulbs attached to the palms of Suozzi’s hands, creating a haunting interplay between light and dark, movement and stillness.

The event, combined with a silent auction after, was able to raise around $50,000 to aid the victims of Haiti’s January earthquake. Congratulations and thanks to all of the skilled performers for donating their time and gifts to such a worthy cause.
