As explained to me by Ms Laura Rubin (Heist Gallery’s publicist) ‘the central theme running through Quick While Still deals with the idea of maintaining stillness in action.’

“Each artist uses paint rather loosely, gesturally, in a way that is meant to call attention to the properties of the paint and the act (or action) of painting.  There is a responsive/adaptive spirit that centers the show.  The paintings on view range from representational and illusionistic to abstract and object-orientated.”

Indeed a careful walk around the work found ad hoc renditions of what time could possibly mean, paint drip dried, paintings half finished and the portrayal of Ms Bernhardt’s Swatch watch ticking in infinity as if time no longer mattered juxtaposed to the suggestion of glamor.

Reflected Ms Eisenberg:

“After two wars, a failed banking system, the real estate bubble, etc., the artists seem to be introducing new values and new paradigms.  Their work is focused yet restless, considerate yet volatile.  I find their energy infectious and their ambition refreshing.”

As it appears so did the gangly audience who were surprisingly behaving themselves and taking in the work instead of the roving celebrity photographer who one suspects represents the excesses of the period that Ms Eisenberg refers to.
