SCV: What made you choose Paper Magazine?

ZW: We knew that our demographic adored Paper [Magazine] so it would be a draw.  It’s a really great event; we literally don’t have to worry about a thing.

SCV: Except that people show up!

ZW:  Exactly. But Paper has been really fantastic.  They have publicized this from every angle.

SCV: So the point of this is to get shoppers in the store?

ZW: Exactly, and to celebrate the publication, of course.  These events always bring in a lot of shoppers, new and old.  Our hope is that the new shoppers keep coming back and eventually become sponsors.

He pointed out the pamphlets being given out at the door that explained how to become a donor and also how to donate to Housing Works’ AIDS foundation.  When I asked him when the next Editors Pick would be, he said it was being planned down at their brand-new Tribeca location for somewhere around August 20th.

Afterwards, I let him return to overseeing the event, which was bustling still to Andrew Andrew’s eclectic mix of the original cast recording of HAIR and some 80’s funk.  I perused the racks again and battled only one sales woman in a mission to save a hot pink paten-leather headband from a life of being in a display window, after we figured out what the price was (thanks to Mr. Wing).

After a last glass of Carlo Rossi, the crowd was dwindling as the clock ticked closer to closing time, and I was pretty sure I’d seen all that was to be seen her.  I took my new knowledge of a great store (and magazine), along with my new purchase, and departed.

(Housing Works has ten locations that can all be found at www.housingworks.org.)
