Walmart shopper who picked up $30 & declined to hand it in leads to Albany, Georgia police launching manhunt for mystery man as social media goes up in arms whether the mystery man should be forced to return the cash.
Whatever happened to ‘losers keepers finders weepers….?’ Cops in Georgia are on the lookout for a middle aged man caught on surveillance at a Walmart store picking up $30 from the floor and gasp… leaving the store without ‘turning it in.’
The Albany Police Department in southern Georgia posted the unknown man’s picture after another shopper claiming they dropped the cash and reporting the incident to cops.
‘This individual picked up the money and did not turn it in to the employees,’ the department wrote on Facebook, referencing a Walmart store located at 2586 N. Slappey Blvd.
Walmart shopper picks up $30 only to keep it
The department later noted that the man returned the cash and that the person who called police decided not to pursue criminal charges.
Noted an update on social media:‘From what I’ve been told, he genuinely did not see anyone drop the $30. He picked it up thinking he had just gotten lucky. Once everything came out, the money was returned and no charges were filed.’
Criminal charges filed? It might be one thing if one finds a wallet on the floor with the person’s id and declines to hand it in but an all together another thing if one finds a bunch of bills lying on the floor, who does one assume it belongs to? Does protocol assume the rightful thing is to hand it in and that the person who dropped it to realize it before leaving the store and ‘claiming’ it at the front register? And will management just let the person who picked up the cash keep it if no one claims it as theirs? But then again what proof can the person claiming it legitimately offer to say that the dropped loot was theirs to begin with…?
Of note, Georgia law stipulates that if a person takes possession of property they know to have been lost without first making an honest effort to return it that could constitute theft. But tell that to social media…
Social media debate keepers loosers protocol
The incident led to social media users mocking the hoopla over the dropped $30 and the assumed protocol the Walmart shopper should’ve adopted.
‘Imagine finding $30 and thinking it is your lucky day, only need to go home and load up Facebook to find your photo on the police department’s page asking for assistance identifying you,’ one person wrote on the department’s post.
Wondered another, ‘So when I find pennies and quarters on the ground, who do I turn them in to?’
Reflected another, ‘If it was a wallet or something, I would get this, but $30 cash on the ground? WTH?’
While some couldn’t resist the urge to be a touch more extreme, ‘I found $20 in front of a Britney Spears concert once in 2001 and bought myself a shirt. Should I be nervous? Should I turn myself in??’
Yes kids, the cops are always watching you….
