No known motive
The school has about 209 students and about 40 to 50 staff members, officials said.
No known motive was immediately known.
It remained unclear how the 28 year old female gunman was able to obtain her cache of weapons, nor why the private Christian school was not guarded at the time of the attack.
The Covenant School was founded as a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church in 2001, according to the school’s website. The school is located in the affluent Green Hill neighborhood just south of downtown Nashville.
The grade school which fluctuates between 195 and 210 in enrolment has 33 teachers, the website said. The school’s website features the motto ‘Shepherding Hearts, Empowering Minds, Celebrating Childhood.’
The Covenant school shooting is believed to be the fifth in the Nashville area since 2011, and first since 2018.
