The University of Evansville is mourning the loss of a student-athlete who died after crashing her car into a utility pole in Boonville, Indiana early Sunday night.
Wabash Valley Athletics shared the news on Monday in a social media post, announcing the passing of sophomore basketball player Jordan Scott, who transferred to UE after playing a year at Wabash Valley College. The star guard played in 27 games with 26 starts as a freshman for the Warriors.
Sgt. Jacobs of the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office told WRTV 6 News that Scott, 20, was driving on State Road 62 near Franz Road around 12:42 a.m. EST when she crashed into a utility pole after veering off a sharp curve. Jacobs describes that area of roads as ‘very curvy.’
Speed cited as contributing factor to fatal crash
At the time of the tragedy, the sophomore guard who had taken a friend home was driving in ‘unfamiliar area’ in Warrick County when she veered off the road.
Jacobs says a witness saw the vehicle leave the road on a sharp curve, hit the pole, and come to rest on its side in a tree line. Police say the car crash led to ‘severe damage’ to Scott’s vehicle and that she died at the scene.
She was the only passenger in the vehicle. Police believe speed played a role in the crash and believe her car went airborne.
Tributes and condolenses pour in
News of the crash prompted a wave of tributes from across the college basketball community, with both the University of Evansville and her former junior college program mourning the loss on Monday.
Scott graduated from Castle High School in Newburgh in 2025 and spent her freshman campaign at Wabash Valley College before transferring to Evansville this summer to play alongside her sister, Jayden.
‘Today, we received a phone call and learned the devastating news that former Lady Warrior and current University of Evansville Purple Ace Jordan Scott has passed away,’ Wabash Valley Athletics shared in a statement.
‘Our prayers and condolences go to the Scott family during this time.’
The University of Evansville confirmed the tragedy on Monday afternoon, describing Scott as a beloved teammate whose presence made an immediate mark on campus.
‘We are heartbroken by Jordan’s passing. Jordan was a beloved member of our Purple Aces family, and we are grateful that she chose to share part of her life with us,’ said UE Vice President for Athletics Dr. Kenneth ‘Ziggy’ Siegfried.
‘Our hearts are especially with her sister and teammate, Jayden, their parents and family, and Jordan’s teammates and coaches. We will surround them with our love, care, and support in the difficult days ahead.’
The university confirmed it is making counseling and grief support services available to students, student-athletes and staff.
