Alexia Verdugo Sigala, Santa Fe, New Mexico woman accidentally shot dead after brother claims uninentionally discharging rifle and striking victim only to later die. Authorities yet to decide what formal charges to file against sibling. 

A Santa Fe, New Mexico woman has died in what authorities are now investigating as the result of an accidental shooting.

A Facebook release from the Santa Fe Police Department stated officers being called out to a home near Atocha Road and Rufina Street around 1.45 p.m, Saturday after reports of an accidental shooting involving the woman’s brother and the victim. 

Brother claims accidentally discharging rifle leading to bullet striking sister 

According to police, 24-year-old Alexia Verdugo Sigala suffered at least one gunshot wound. She was airlifted to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, but did not survive her injuries.

A report via the Santa Fe New Mexican described Alexia Sigala as being the Capital High volleyball coach.

During the initial investigation, Santa Fe Police Officers and Detectives learned that Verdugo Sigala’s adult brother had allegedly discharged a rifle unintentionally and she was struck in the torso.

Detectives interviewed her brother and took the firearm as evidence.

Authorities to determine appropriate charges to file against brother

Homicide Detectives have been working with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate charges.

An update will be provided when the brother is formally charged pending the results of ongoing investigations and discussions with prosecutors, KOAT reported.

The sibling’s identity to date has not been revealed. No other suspects are at large and there is no public safety concern to the community, Santa Fe police stated.
