A 24-year-old South Carolina woman and expectant mother has died in a freak accident after her hair getting caught in a go-kart.
Baylee Johnson, 24, was 16 weeks pregnant with her first child, when she died Monday, August 31, just over a week after the freak accident that happened at a go-karting track in Sumter, South Carolina.
She was driving the racer when her hair got trapped in the sprocket of a go-kart and her neck hyperextended, stopping her from breathing, the Sumter County Coroner, Robbie Baker, told the State.
Carefree adventure turns into tragedy
Johnson was taken to McLeod Regional Medical Center only to pass away along with her unborn child, eight days later.
According to her partner, Justin Lowder, Baylee had just gotten her dream job as a medical assistant at Prisma Health OB/GYN–Sumter and that the couple were eagerly awaiting the birth of their son whom they had already named Johnny.
‘This isn’t how Baylee and I ever imagined sharing this news, but God has blessed us with a baby boy. Baylee is carrying our sweet Johnny, due February 21,’ Justin Lowder, wrote on Facebook last Thursday, four days before Baylee and Johnny’s deaths.
‘Please pray for Baylee and our precious baby boy,’ the expectant father added. ‘We love them both more than words could ever say.’
According to her obituary, a visitation for Johnson is being held Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home in Sumter.
Johnson’s funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Her family has also asked for memorial donations to the McLeod Guest House through the McLeod Health Foundation.
