A 6-year-old girl in Illinois has died after she was ‘accidentally’ struck by a school bus, Frankfort, IL police confirmed.
According to police, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Aberdeen Road at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday and found the unresponsive 6-year-old girl with serious injuries. Witnesses and first responders attempted CPR and life-saving measures at the scene, officials said.
The child, Jenna Menias, was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where the six year old was pronounced dead. Menias, a first grader at Grand Prairie Elementary School was struck shortly after arriving arriving home from school, ABC7Chicago reported.
Not the usual bus driver who’d dropped 6-year-old girl off
According to her mother, Yvette Menias, Jenna had just gotten off a school bus near the family’s home, off Harlem Road in the Prestwick neighborhood, when she was struck by the same bus. The parent said it was not their usual bus driver on the route.
Frankfort School District 157-C in a release stated that the student was involved in an accident with a school bus.
‘Our immediate priority is the health, safety, and emotional well-being of the student involved, their family, and all our students and staff,’ the district said in a statement. ‘We know that an event of this nature deeply affects our entire school family. We encourage students who may be feeling worried or upset to reach out to a trusted adult, teacher, social worker, or other member of our school support team.’
To date authorities have yet to confirm how the 6-year-old girl came to be struck by the school-bus and whether all safety procedures were in place. To date no charges have been filed.
Not immediately clear is whether the school bus driver faced the potential for charges.
Investigation launched after Frankfort 6-year-old girl fatally struck by school bus
The Frankfort school district said it and Lincoln Way Transportation are working together with the Frankfort Police Department and Will County Sheriff’s Office as they investigate the situation.
‘This tragic incident has had a profound impact on those involved, their families, and our community,’ police said in a statement Tuesday night. ‘We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.’
Police added, ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their family, loved ones and all those impacted as they navigate this difficult time.’
They also asked anyone with information to contact the Frankfort Police Department.
A GoFundMe established for the family, ‘Support the Menias Family,’ at time of publishing had raised just over $33K.
