Misty Roberts, a 43-year-old mother of two from DeRidder, was freed Monday, a week after a judge rejected prosecutors’ plea to reconsider her 90 day sentence, which was described by a seething local resident as ‘a slap on the wrist for a child predator,’ according to KALB.
Did political affiliations serve to keep punishment minimal?
Judge Kent Savoie had sentenced Roberts, the former top elected leader of DeRidder, in June to just 90 days along with a $5,000 fine and two five-year suspended sentences after she was convicted by jury of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile in the crimes involving her 16-year-old victim.
Prosecutors with the Beauregard Parish District Attorney’s Office, who had been seeking the maximum of 17 years, asked the judge to reconsider his sentence, which he refused to do Aug. 31.
‘A slap on the wrist for a child predator, because at the end of the day, that is exactly what it is,’ outraged DeRidder native Kari McGee told KALB in June after the judge issued his sentence.
‘When it comes to children, we should use the fullest extent of the law,’ she said.

Roberts, who was elected mayor in 2018, openly flirted with the drunken boy while wearing a dress in a skimpy orange bikini at the July 2024 pool party.
Prosecutors told the court Robers then lured her victim to the ‘bonus room’ of her home, stripped down and had sex with him, according to court documents and witness testimony introduced during her trial.
The victim’s mother criticized Roberts in court — and said his life hasn’t been the same since.
‘You thought so much of yourself in that bikini that night, you knew exactly what you were doing with his mind. He was 16,’ the mom said. ‘What hurt almost as much as the initial betrayal was the attempt to shift the blame onto a 16-year-old boy from a 42-year-old woman.’
Plan B emergency contraception rushed to former mayor
Roberts’ teenage son took a photo of the boy on top of his mother and said in an interview played for the jury that he saw his mom having sex with his friend through a crack in a window.
Her own daughter also testified she saw Roberts and the teen victim ‘on top of each other.’
The ex-mayor’s best friend and former sister-in-law, Jill Weaver, testified that she had overheard Roberts’ teenage son screaming after the drunken romp that his mom ‘effed’ his ‘best friend.’
But there was more.
A DoorDash driver also took the stand and recalled delivering a Plan B emergency contraception to Roberts’ home the day after the party — while frantic text messages showing the victim’s mom asking the ex-mayor about the possibility of her becoming pregnant.
Roberts resigned as mayor of DeRidder, a town of 9,800, just days before her 2024 arrest.
