An hours-long police chase involving four N.J teens alleged to have stolen a luxury SUV ended in the death of a grandmother and her long-term partner after the couple’s car was hit head-on by a stolen G Wagon worth $220K.
Robert Barr Jr., 54, and Alice Stilwell, 67, died Saturday morning after their car was hit in Mays Landing by a stolen 2024 Mercedes-Benz G Wagon valued at $220,000. Four teenagers who’d allegedly been in the stolen vehicle attempted to flee the scene of the crash but were arrested, NJ.com reported.
Stolen luxury SUV vehicle leads to hours long police chase
Police had been chasing the stolen vehicle prior to the fatal collision. The G Wagon was first spotted by a borough police officer in Longport at 3:42 a.m. The officer attempted to pull it over, but the vehicle fled over the JFK Memorial Bridge.
Longport police officers went to the address of the owner and found that they were unaware their vehicle was missing. The officers sent out an alert to other Atlantic County agencies to be on the lookout for the vehicle, which had Pennsylvania plates, according to a affidavit cited by NBC10.
Hamilton Township police spotted the vehicle near Forsythia Court in their town four hours later at 7:46 a.m. The affidavit notes that it was spotted alongside a Land Rover which also had Pennsylvania plates, and that both vehicles fled the neighborhood.
Hamilton police began chasing the Mercedes, but it fled from a traffic stop. Officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle, the affidavit says.
Just six minutes later, the vehicle was driving south on the wrong side of Route 50 in Mays Landing when it struck Barr and Stilwell’s vehicle head-on near Third Street in a wrong way crash.
The teenagers attempted to run from the Mercedes on foot but were apprehended by police.
Repeat offender makes initial court appearance
The four teens have been charged with crimes including conspiracy to commit second-degree aggravated assault, joyriding, eluding police and receiving a stolen motor vehicle. One has been identified as 18-year-old Nayshaun Brown, of Atlantic City.
The other teens have not been identified as they are all minors. Court documents stated marijuana was recovered and that Brown appeared to police to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. NBC10 reported he was identified as the SUV vehicle driver.
Court records also show Brown was already facing charges in two other cases from the past two months, at least one of which involved a stolen car on July 27, Action News reported.
Stilwell and Barr were identified as the victims of the fatal collision in a GoFundMe page created by a friend of Stillwell’s family. A description on the fundraising page reads: ‘In the early morning of Saturday August 22nd, 2026 beloved mother and grandmother Alice Stilwell Holt and her long term partner (Bob Barr Jr.) were struck and killed in a motor vehicle accident involving a stolen car driven by teenagers in Atlantic County, NJ.’
Stilwell was a hairdresser, and Barr worked as a bus driver for the Egg Harbor Township School District.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said the teenagers could face additional charges as the investigation continues.
Brown is expected to face a judge on Thursday.
