A mother and her two teen daughters who’d been out celebrating an upcoming birthday were killed after their car was struck by a wrong way driver.
Vanessa Schoettler and her daughters, Kloie and Kylie, died at the scene of the crash early Sunday morning near Bakersfield, California.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened shortly before 12:45 a.m. on Highway 99, north of 7th Standard Road, Kern County.

The crash according to authorities involved three vehicles, the family’s Honda Accord, a white 2019 BMW 530i, and a white 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. At the time of the crash, it was unknown which vehicle was traveling the wrong way, KMPH reported.
Authorities said Vanessa and her daughters were traveling in the family’s Honda Accord after attending a concert in Fresno when a BMW vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes crashed into them and another southbound vehicle.
The Honda became engulfed in flames following the impact. Vanessa, Kloie and Kylie were all pronounced dead at the scene the SF Chronicle reported.
Loved ones say the three had attended a concert to celebrate one of the teen daughters turning 17 soon.
‘What should have been a weekend filled with memories and a celebration of Kloie turning 17 has instead left a family trying to comprehend the loss of a mother and her two daughters all at once,’ a GoFundMe dedicated to the victims said.
Authorities continue to investigate fatal wrong way crash
The trio leaves behind a brother and son — who will turn 16 the same day as Kloie’s birthday on Aug. 20.
‘There are simply no words for the magnitude of this loss or for what this family is facing in the days, weeks, and months ahead,’ the GoFundMe stated.
A 44-year-old man driving a BMW 530I and his passenger were taken to the hospital with severe injuries.
Two passengers in the third vehicle involved, a Chevy Colorado, had minor injuries.
The crash is still under investigation, with authorities yet to determine whether speeding or alcohol were involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
It remained unclear what charges would be forthcoming.
