A Georgia police officer has been placed on leave after shooting and killing a baby donkey in Polk County during a search for a missing person.
The donkey, named HeeHaw was fatally shot at the Elsberry Riding and Farm as police sought to locate a missing person according to a shared social media post.
The post states the beloved animal being shot by law enforcement as they searched the property’s pasture around 12:45 a.m. Sunday without the owner’s knowledge or permission.

Hannah Israel, the owner of the rural property in Rockmart, Georgia, in her post claims officers told her that HeeHaw ran toward police while braying, causing officers to believe they were in danger. They allegedly attempted to use a Taser on the donkey before one of the deputies shot and killed the animal.
Israel says HeeHaw was a bottle-raised donkey who had been raised inside the home, participated in petting zoos and was extremely comfortable around people.
‘He never knew a stranger,’ she wrote.
She believes HeeHaw was simply doing what donkeys naturally do when unfamiliar people enter their territory — approaching and alerting to their presence.
Israel intends to pursue legal action over the shooting and is asking people to share HeeHaw’s story in hopes of getting justice for him.
‘Share this everywhere and get justice for HeeHaw. We are heart broken.’ she wrote. ‘He was my SON!!’
Fundraiser launched to cover lawyer fees as officer identity involved witheld
The post has since led at time of publishing, $10K raised towards ‘Cover lawyer fees after Heehaw’s Tragic Death,’ according to a linked GoFundme.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed its agency was not involved in the shooting, noting the incident involved officers from the Polk County Police Department and the Cedartown Police Department.
‘We extend our sincere condolences to the family and everyone affected by this unfortunate incident. We understand the concern and sadness surrounding what occurred,’ the Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated.
FOX5 stated officials have not released the identity of the officer who fired the fatal shot or detailed why the animal was perceived as a threat.
