Body of Scottish woman, Elisabeth Jane Ross found in suitcase in abandoned building in Athens, Greece as authorities now seek to determine how UK woman came to die and how her remains ended up at the address. Investigation is described as criminal case.
The body of a Scottish woman has been found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens, Greece as local authorities now seek to discover how the woman came to die along with how she came to end at the address.
The remains of Elisabeth Jane Ross, was first discovered by a homeless man on Evelpidon Street in the Athenian neighbourhood of Kpseli at around 1pm on July 18.
The male followed a strong stench inside the deserted building and sighted a human limb hanging outside of the suitcase.
No visible wounds of any clear signs of struggle
Elisabeth, 38, who is understood to have been born in Scotland in February 1988, had been dead for approximately eight days according to forensics. No visible wounds of any clear signs of struggle were found on the body, police stated.
The deceased woman is thought to have travelled to Greece from Cyprus last month according to Greek nvestigators the BBC reported.
Ross had reportedly flown to the region from the US, arriving in Greece, on 29 June, from Cyprus. Greek homicide officers sent fingerprints to Interpol after drawing a blank on local databases. US authorities had provided evidence on the basis of the DNA that police released on Wednesday.
Trying to retrace victim’s movements prior to her death
Leading up to her death, Elisabeth had been staying in Athens with friends, who reported seeing her for the last time on 15 July.
Adding to the mystery surrounding the circumstances of her death, it was revealed that her mobile phone had been fully operational until news of her identification was released.
CCTV was being examined to try to trace Ross’s movements before her death. Authorities were treating the incident ‘as a criminal act, given how the body was found,’ the Guardian reported.
Earlier appeals described the woman as around 5ft 4in tall with reddish-brown hair, and wearing black shorts and a T-shirt.
Airlines are also believed to have been approached as investigators try to reconstruct Ross’s journey to Greece and determine whether she was travelling alone. Officials in Greece and Cyprus were scouring flight logs and hotel bookings.
Greek officials did not rule out UK investigators joining the inquiry.
A British Foreign Office spokesperson said: ‘Our thoughts are with Elizabeth’s family during this difficult time. We are providing consular support and are in contact with the local authorities.’
