A Texas A&M University student from Hereford has died days after suffering traumatic injuries in a car accident, her family said Tuesday.

Avery Detten died May 26 after several days in intensive care, according to her family. Avery sustained a traumatic brain injury and other injuries in a serious automobile wreck on May 21 and had been treated at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.

In a series of posts, Avery’s family described her as critical but initially stable as doctors worked to reduce brain swelling, manage elevated intracranial pressure and treat a collapsed lung, fractured pelvis and other fractures. The updates said Avery was placed in a medically induced coma, placed on a ventilator and heavily sedated while physicians tried different medications to control swelling and protect her brain.
