A stabbing spree at the hands of an irate motorist along a Virginia state Interstate highway on Sunday led to four people stabbed, including a female motorist killed along with a dog. The incident led to responding police shooting and killing the road rage driver at the scene.

The Virginia State Police stated the incident happening on the Interstate 495 Beltway around 1:17 p.m. ET when they were called about reports of a road rage incident after a car crash.

When officials arrived at the scene, they found four stabbing victims and a man with a knife. Authorities said he refused to put down the knife and he was shot by a state trooper. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

A 39-year-old woman and a dog were among the stabbing victims; they both died from their injuries, WUSA9 reported.

The crash and incident is under investigation and the roadway is still closed as of 4:30 p.m., according to the Northern Virginia Department of Transportation

The VDOT advised that people “seek alternate routes” as miles-long traffic continues to stretch down the beltway.

The incident is not believed to be terrorism-related, officials said following a mass shooting episode at an Austin, Texas bar that left three dead, including a gunman donning Islam inspired garb and possibly in response to the U.S strike on Iran over the weekend.
