A murder‑suicide at a Port Jefferson, Long Island home on Monday left a couple dead, Suffolk County police said.
Officers responded to a welfare check at 135 Oakwood Road just after 11 a.m. after 63‑year‑old Valerie Kopetic failed to appear at work, police said. When they arrived, officers found Kopetic and her domestic partner, 68‑year‑old Paul Trefimovich, dead from gunshot wounds inside the couple’s residence.
Prior instances of domestic violence?
The Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad determined that Trefimovich shot and killed Kopetic before turning the weapon on himself, the Greater Long Island reported citing authorities.
A police spokeswoman could not say who called to request the welfare check or why, or if there were any prior calls for the department’s assistance at the home. Little was known about the couple, how long they had been together or whether there had been previous instances of domestic violence.
Detectives did not release a motive and asked anyone with information to contact the Homicide Squad at 631‑852‑6392.
