A mass shooting in Canada has left up to 10 dead, including the shooter and another 25 injured after a ‘woman in a dress’ opened fire at a high school in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, northeastern British Columbia, Canadian authorities said.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School after the shooter, since identified (but not confirmed by authorities) as 17-year-old transgender student Jesse ‘Jess’ Strang fired a barrage of bullets, leading to eight individuals found dead inside the school along with another two at a connected residence. The shooter according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The victims include six people found deceased inside the school, one who died en route to the hospital, and two others discovered at a connected residence. A post on social media indicated the two victims being a parent of the shooter, Jennifer Strang, and a sibling.

More than 25 people were injured, with at least two suffering life-threatening wounds and others airlifted for treatment the nytimes reported.
The shooter’s alleged identification was first reported by Western Standard and Juno News, which cited a close family member, the shooter’s uncle, Russell G. Strang, as the source.
Strang according to various social media posts (yet confirmed by authorities) was a biological male who started identifying as a girl in 2023.

Tumbler Ridge shooter had anti-social or nihilistic impulses
The incident began around 1:20 p.m. local time when reports of an active shooter prompted a Police Initiated Public Alert (since canceled). Authorities state there is no ongoing threat to the public, and the shelter-in-place order for the town has been lifted.
The shooter’s identity, any potential connections to groups, and motivations remain under active investigation. Initial reports told of the school shooter being a woman in a dress with brown hair, possibly identifying as transgender and transitioning from biological male to female in 2023.

It was claimed that the alleged shooting suspect was raised in a house with guns. Moreover, it was also alleged that posts from the shooter’s mother on Facebook suggest Strang had behavioural issues and violent tendencies early on.

Canada officials state suspect’s motives remain unclear
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd told reporters that officials who identified the shooter only as a ‘female’ are not disclosing the name at this time and the suspect’s motive remains unclear.
‘I think we will struggle to determine the ‘why’, but we will try our best to determine what transpired,’ Floyd said at a press conference.
