Three daycare workers in California have been fired after one of them threw a shoe at a 5-year-old ‘special needs’ girl, while the other two employees failed to report the incident.

Notice of the transgression came after the special needs child told her mother about the episode who then confronted the daycare center’s director, leading to a review of captured surveillance video.

Footage showed the worker, only identified as Ms. Emily taking off a shoe and hurling it across the classroom at the child. The child is heard crying after she was hit by the shoe. Two other workers are seen in the video, with one of them apparently laughing.

‘I thought my baby was safe’

The alleged incident happened at Destiny Development Center on January 16, KTLA reported.

The victim’s mother, Michelae Jones, said she wants the employee who her threw the shoe arrested on child abuse and assault charges.

‘I’ve been with these people for three years,’ she told KTLA. ‘I really thought my baby was safe.’

Added the mother, ‘You need to be in jail like any other child abuser. That’s what I want — justice.’

The daycare center’s director, Danielle Williams told Jones that the woman who threw the shoe didn’t mean to harm the child. Williams said the employee was ‘throwing shoes into another room that weren’t supposed to be there and [the child] accidentally got hit in the ear with the shoe.’

The outlet said Williams launched an investigation and fired the employee who threw the shoe. She also reportedly terminated the other two workers, as they failed to report the incident.

‘This is not a representation of my school. We don’t approve of abuse,’ Williams said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who is investigating the incident has not indicated whether the daycare worker involved would face charges.
