Summer Coughran, Albuquerque, New Mexico woman with history of schizophrenia, charged with the shooting murder of her father, Kirk Coughran. Daughter had claimed her father assaulting her only for police to find the daughter’s claims not lining up with the evidence along with prior reports of assault against her father.
An Albuquerque, New Mexico woman has been charged with the shooting death of her father despite claiming that she had shot and killed the man on account of the parent being abusive.
Summer Coughran, 28, called cops just on 2.45 a.m, Tuesday morning, to say that she had shot her father at their their home on Wildfire Road NW, north of Paradise Boulevard.
Daughter’s claims of abusive dad fail to line up with evidence and prior history
Upon officers with the Albuquerque Police Department arriving at the scene, they found the body of Kirk Coughran, 65, who had been shot and killed some 15 hours earlier.
Leading up to the shooting, Coughran claimed that her father had assaulted her and had ‘beaten’ her her whole life, KOAT reported.
During police questioning, cops said Coughran gave inconsistent statements that did not align with the physical evidence. She was also unable to describe any actions by her father that would cause a reasonable person to fear for their life according to KOB.
Victim’s father had previously declined to press assault charges against his daughter
During the investigation, detectives recovered previous police reports involving the daughter, in which she had allegedly assaulted her father, including one report indicating that Coughran had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and may not have taken her medication, and that her father didn’t want to press charges against her.
Previous criminal complaints showed Coughran being charged with aggravated assault upon a peace officer on December 24, 2024. Days later, another relative sought and obtained a restraining order after expressing concerns for their safety due to threats of physical violence made by Summer Coughran.
Summer Coughran has since been charged with one count of open murder and remains held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
