The couple resided at Timberland at Crestbruck Apartments, at apartment 201 which was found locked according to a release from Ankeny authorities.

Suspect had been taken into custody the previous day on unrelated charges

Brown was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Sunday after officers responded to reports of a suspicious person with a weapon trying to break into a vehicle, police said.

During that encounter, he became combative and an officer was assaulted, police said.

Investigators said the case remains open and more work is underway, but they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

“At this time, the suspect that we believe committed this act is in custody,” McGraw said.

Authorities had yet to say what may have led to the man stabbing the woman to death.

Browne remains booked in the Polk County Jail and is now being charged with first-degree murder. Authorities continue to investigate.
