A Florida man been charged with his wife’s death after crashing while driving a golf cart allegedly while under the influence. A claim the husband now denies through his lawyer.

Angelo Theodosiou, 64, originally hailing from N.Y, was driving the golf buggy through the couple’s ritzy Nocatee estate in St Johns County, Florida when the alleged DUI driver suddenly crashed. The incident led to the man’s wife, Christina Theodosiou, 58, fatally striking her head after falling off the cart.

The incident happened in a gated community in Jacksonville, where residents often use golf carts to travel within the community just outside of Jacksonville. Homes in the enclave go for anywhere from $550,000 to over $2 million.

Florida husband refused to take sobriety test despite police alleging drunk driving 

On the evening of the tragedy, just on 10.45 p.m on November 30, Christina was airlifted to Jacksonville Memorial Trauma Hospital. She would not survive, with officials stating the woman succumbing to severe head injuries incurred in the crash.

Residents in the neighborhood said teenagers and adult golf cart drivers regularly drive through the area with no speed bumps or stop signs to control traffic, KCBD reported.

St Johns County Sheriff’s Office arrest records reportedly allege the husband is ‘at fault’ for the accident, suspecting he was under the influence. 

Officers noted his ‘eyes were bloodshot and watery and pupils displayed a reddened sclera.’

The report also noted ‘an odor of alcoholic beverage emitted from the defendant from approximately three feet away in an open area.’

Angelo first agreed to take a standardized sobriety test, but later refused it, the records reportedly stated. 

‘Once placed under arrest, the defendant repeatedly asked what was happening and why he was arrested,’ the arrest report said, according to Action News Jax.

Florida husband denies driving under the influence or causing crash

Angelo Theodosiou now faces charges of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to police testing. 

The husband was bonded out of jail on December 1 and is set to appear in court on January 6, 2026.

Speaking on behalf of his client, L. Lee Lockett, defense attorney for the accused told the St Johns Citizen, ‘My client maintains his innocence and we’re looking forward to receiving the evidence.’

Adding, ‘He didn’t cause the accident, he was not impaired.’

‘He’s heartbroken,’ the lawyer added. ‘He’s distraught. He’s depressed as can be.’

‘I’ve spoken to his son, and what I’ve been told is the entire family is heartbroken, and they are standing behind him,’ the lawyer said.

NY couple had moved to Florida to retire in ritzy community 

Originally from New York, the couple moved to Florida to retire. Angelo was a successful business owner who ran a restaurant in Jackson Heights.

The Jacksonville residential area is one of the highest-income counties in the US. St. Johns County, according to Fluid Realty.

The area ‘boasts a thriving tourist economy and has grown into a year-round destination for visitors, especially St. Augustine, with its claim as the oldest city in the country.’
