At the time, the boy, identified as Carson Lawson had been in the driveway of their home – preparing to leave for school and waiting for the school bus.
Anders did not notice the 5-year-old being outside and continued to leave for work only to strike the boy with her vehicle, killing him instantly according to the Slidell Police Department said in a Facebook release.
According to Slidell Police, the crash occurred around 7 a.m. in the 300 block of Spartan Loop within the Spartan Trace subdivision.
Police said Anders showed signs of impairment and was later determined to be under the influence of alcohol and central nervous system depressants, KPTV reported.
Anders was arrested at the scene for vehicular homicide.
‘This is any parent’s worst nightmare,’ said Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau. ‘I was at the scene this morning, as well as several of our officers. This affects everyone. This hits home hard for all of us and all of the first responders who were at that scene.’

Chief Seuzeneau said he spoke with the victim’s mother several times throughout the day and offered condolences.
‘There isn’t anything I can say to make this situation any better,’ he said. ‘All we can do is pray for peace for this family. Go home, hug your kids or grandkids a little tighter tonight. Life is precious, and tragedy can strike any of us without warning.’
Carson Lawson had just turned five in June. An autopsy for the 5-year-old is scheduled for this week.
Support for Carson’s Memorial Services was created to help Abigayle Combs cover funeral expenses for her 5-year-old son, Carson, who was allegedly run over by his drunk grandmother.
