A teacher was found dead inside a classroom at Munford High on Thursday morning, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The macabre discovery lead to officials  shutting down the school for the day.

Samuel Colin Day was found deceased inside of a classroom at the high school around 6 a.m. No foul play is suspected in Day’s death, Munford Police stated.

The teacher is believed to have died before school started. It remained unclear if the educator had killed himself from the day before his body was found or the following morning.

What led to Munford high school teacher shooting self dead?

Responding to the teacher’s death, Munford High School said that class was canceled for the day due to an ’emergency situation’. Munford High School’s website listed Day as the MHS Special Education Director.

Tipton County Schools Assistant Superintendent Rebekah Byrd called Day’s death ‘an isolated incident.’ To date it remained unclear what led to the educator apparently taking his own life.

In a Facebook post, Munford PD said all students and staff were safe but added that the high school would be closed for the rest of the day Thursday as police continued to investigate.

Munford Police called Day’s death a ‘tragic incident’ and said, ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, students, and faculty affected by this heartbreaking event. We ask that the community respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.’

Not immediately clear is what challenges or hurdles, if any, the teacher may have been specifically dealing with preceding his suicide’s death.
