Boston’s Democrat mayor, Michelle Wu becomes most hated after expressing condolences to family of knifeman killed by off-duty police officer during Chick-fil-A in Copley Square knife attack.
When the media seeks to politicize human tragedy…
Boston’s Democrat mayor, Michelle Wu has come under attack after she expressed sympathy to the family of an un-named assailant who was shot dead by an off-duty cop after moments earlier chasing two individuals with a knife, forced to run into a Chick-Fil-A venue for fear of their lives.
The controversy follows an un-identified police officer with the Boston Police Department gunning down the perp after chasing after two un-identified individuals into the Chick-fil-A in Copley Square just shortly before 5:30 p.m, Saturday ET, reported NBC 10.

Crime and punishment
Media reports told of the perp attempting to stab and kill the two fleeing individuals. It remained unclear what led to the perp targeting the victims and if they had been randomly set upon.
An off-duty cop was inside the restaurant and identified himself to the attacker, then told the man to drop this knife before firing his weapon.
‘The officer then instructed the man to drop the weapon, to which he did not comply,’ Boston police Commissioner Michael Cox said during a Saturday night press conference.
‘The officer then discharged his weapon to stop the threat and the armed man was struck. He was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced [dead]. The officer was transported to a hospital for evaluation, but at this time, there are no other reported injuries.’
It’s what happened next more than the actual crime, why it happened (and why such crimes happen and how to address them) along with the officer’s trigger happy response (hailed a hero, while one commentator on social media who claimed being as the scene insisting the cop gave the perp no time to drop the weapon and immediately firing and killing them) was the Mayor’s response.

Politicizing Chick-fil-A Copley Square knife attack
Added Wu who had also attended the Saturday night press conference: ‘My condolences and all of our thoughts are with the family of the individual whose life has been lost.’
Wu who has been the target of antagonistic press in the past who have branded her ‘woke’ or sought to diminish her political positions soon found herself being browbeaten for expressing empathy – not to the actual perp but to the perp’s family – who they themselves did nothing wrong and will now presumably be forced to deal with the aftermath of the perp’s actions and the family member’s loss of life.
Wu during the press briefing also acknowledged all those impacted during the episode, saying:
‘I am also thinking of all the people who were impacted here today in one of the busier parts of the city with this tragedy. I’m glad the officer is safe and very grateful for a quick response from all of our first responders.’
But it wasn’t enough. Ever right wing extreme conservative tabloid outlet, the dailymail (the world’s largest tabloid outlet by sheer traffic and readers) used the incident as an opportunity to use incendiary language and one sided slant in its report.
Reported the outlet: ‘Others slammed Wu for not thanking the officer who stopped the attacker or explicitly addressing the bystanders he was trying to stab.’
Along with, ‘Social media users were shocked that Wu’s first comment on the incident was to offer sympathy for the knife-wielding attacker.’
The incident went on to evoke a range of emotions, criticism and responses, including one commentator who wrote, ‘An off-duty police officer in Boston saved lives on Saturday by neutralizing a knife-wielding maniac who chased two people into a Chick-fil-A. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu reacted by bizarrely giving condolences TO THE ATTACKER. Democrat leaders treat criminals as victims.’
Which begets the question, can it really be said offering condolences to the family of a perp is now akin to ‘treating criminals’ as victims? Or is this perhaps just a politician/mayor attempting to handle complex social themes and recognising that there are victims across the board, including the perp’s family who presumably would not have willed the death of their own family member.
Wrote another commentator, ‘These so called political leaders are despicable. How about thoughts and prayers for the cop and his family who acted bravely to save our citizens,’
Posted another, ‘They tell you who they really care about… certainly NOT the tourists visiting Boston nor the victims of the attempted stabbings.’
And then there was this response from media outlet, Townhall, that piqued this author’s attention:
‘Are you kidding me? We don’t have to feel bad for the armed psychos who tried to kill people eating. Sorry—screw that guy. The officer is a hero, and that message shouldn’t be trampled on or muddied by some pro-criminal messaging. We don’t have to feel bad for criminal scum and when they die, that’s a benefit for public safety.’
Is it a public benefit when ‘criminal scum’ die? What creates criminal scum in the first place (for a lack of better words) and how does a society seek to address such crime and why do such crimes even happen or are we to believe such individuals are unsavable and to be gunned down by trigger happy cops (why not shoot at a limb, why not try to reason with the perp, why not call for back up and why is it almost the first response of law enforcement to respond to discontent with lethal violence and why is this normalised and sanctioned and ‘necessary’ behavior and actions?).
Perhaps making the above incident even more compelling and politically intriguing is the fact that Mayor found herself the focus of the tabloids in late 2023 after hosting a ‘no whites’ Christmas party for ‘electeds of color’ in the city that some critics branded racist. Which tabloids? I’ll let you the reader take a guess and why….
