Kelsey Bourdon, Elkhart, Indiana mother of 3 dies four days after giving birth to a baby girl due to unforeseen circumstances, including brain seizures according to husband, Tyler Bourdon. Birthing mom had worked as a nurse at Elkhart General Hospital where she gave birth and passed away.
An Elkhart, Indiana mother of three, died just days after delivering her third child following ‘unforeseen’ complications with child birth.
Kelsey Bourdon, delivered a healthy baby girl on January 20th at the Elkhart General Hospital where she worked as a nurse. According to the woman’s husband, Tyler Bourdon, Kelsey developed swelling in her brain, suffered a seizure and tragically died around 2 p.m. on Friday, January 24.
Posted Tyler Bourdon on Facebook, on January 24, ‘To everyone in our lives, I’m posting a very short update now since so many of you have been in the dark. As some/most of you know Kelsey Bourdon and I were expecting our 3rd child on 1/20/25. We did not know the gender. On that date, Kelsey gave birth to a beautiful little girl. The night before we were to be discharged things took a turn for the worse and we found out that Kelsey had some swelling in her brain and suffered a seizure shortly thereafter. Those things led to a cascade of events that ultimately ended in her death at 14:17 this afternoon.’

Walk of Honor for organ donor, birthing mom
Kelsey had elected to be a donor every year since she got her license and they will be holding a donor hero walk sometime tomorrow at EGH which I’m told is starting from ICU waiting room (elevator G) and ending at the ER entrance. The time has not been given to me yet so I will send an update post when I get that information. Let’s show Elkhart how special this lady truly is. She’s impacted so many of us in magnificent ways.
Posted the grieving husband and father of three on January 25: ‘I know a lot of people are waiting to know when the honor walk is for Kelsey Bourdon today. I still have not heard a time yet but was informed that there will be a 2-3 hour window between when I’ll post the time in FB and when it’s actually occurring so please keep an eye out and plan accordingly!’
Posted Caitlin Beachy, the ‘very best friend’ of Kelsey on January 25: ‘There will be a Walk of Honor for organ donation later today at Elkhart General Hospital, but we still are not exactly sure what time yet. The family would like as many people here as possible to help honor her. As soon as I have a definite time, I will post again.’
The hero walk occurred later early evening on Saturday and was shared by Elkhart General Hospital staff who praised Kelsey not only for being a great nurse but her selflessness even after death.

Rates of maternal deaths during child birth
Posted the Beacon Nursing Honor Guard on January 25:
‘Kelsey had been an RN working in Oncology, the OB unit, and the Ambulatory Infusion Clinic. She was a wife and young mother of three. She has always been adamant about being an organ donor so this evening she had a donor honor walk to pay respects and honor her going for organ donation which will save multiple lives. Our Honor Guard felt very proud to know her and humbled to be there. We are grateful for Kelsey’s family, friends, and colleagues and will keep them in our thoughts.’
To date it remained unclear if Kelsey had been struggling with a previous health condition which may have exacerbated child birth. It remained unclear what may have led to the birthing mother to experience brain seizures while delivering and the frequency of such incidents for laboring moms.
In the days since Kelsey Bourdon’s death, a GoFundme fundraiser in support of her surviving husband and three children had raised over $33K of a $50K target goal.
Notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with respect to rates of maternal deaths during childbirth: ‘Rates in 2022 were 14.4 deaths per 100,000 live births for women younger than 25, 21.1 for those ages 25–39, and 87.1 for those age 40 and older. The rate for women age 40 and older was six times higher than the rate for women younger than age 25.’
The author has since reached out to family and friends to ascertain Kelsey Bourdon’s age at the time of her unfortunate death.
