A 3 month old baby boy has died after drowning after his mother fell asleep while holding him at a Louisville, Kentucky motel bathtub.
Shortly before 4:40 a.m. on Jan 1, 2025, Louisville Metro police officers were called to a reported drowning on Airport Hotel Boulevard out in Edgewood, where Motel 6 Louisville – Airport/Fair Expo is located.
The officers found a baby boy, since identified as Ki’arri Rayne Winstead on social media who drowned in the bathtub and gave CPR until EMS arrived to help. Despite these efforts, the infant died before they could be taken to the hospital.
Family suspect drugs may have led to 3 month old Louisville boy drowning
‘They told me that he had drowned,’ the boy’s sister, Kiyah Winstead said according to WSAZ. ‘My mom was holding him in the bath. She had fallen asleep, and he drowned while she was sleeping. Her boyfriend came back and that’s when they found the baby.’
The identity of the 3 month old boy’s mother was not made public. Also not immediately clear is how the mother came to fall asleep and whether she was under the influence.
Kiyah Winstead said her grandmother suspects drugs may have played a role in the child’s death.
The family also wished they could have done more to save Ki’arri.
‘There were so many things that had happened that people were aware of but there was just not anything done,’ Kiyah Winstead said. ‘I want other people to be able to avoid situations like this from happening.’
3 month old baby boy’s mom struggled with drug addiction
Of note, Kiyah’s grandmother currently has custody of the teen girl after being taken away from her biological mom, who has struggled with drug addiction.

A GoFundme fundraiser for burial costs organized by the boy’s sister, Kiyah Winstead as of Thursday late afternoon had raised $595.
It remained unclear if the boy’s mom now faced any charges.
