Clever, Missouri police chief Michael Evans resigns 3 months on the job after domestic violence charge leaving local residents shocked as the Greene County Sheriff’s Office desperately seeks new replacement.

Sh*t happens…. The City of Clever in Missouri has been left without a police chief after its head cop was charged with domestic assault in Greene County last week.

Michael Evans was only in the role for 3 months after being sworn in July before resigning following notice of the alleged ‘domestic violence‘ incident. According to court records, 49-year-old cop was charged with second-degree domestic assault.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office stated on November 7, around 10 p.m., deputies responded to the 3700 block of W. Wilderness Street for a disturbance, KY3 reported.

‘I thought he was going to be good…’

The identity of the alleged victim was not made public.

Brenda Gardner according to Ozarksfirst has lived in Clever for 36 years commented on the abrupt resignation of Clover Police Chief, Mike Evans, saying, ‘it is unfortunate the city needs a new chief of police so soon.’

Conceding she had hope for the former chief, the long time local reflected:

‘I thought he was going to be good. He wasn’t real cocky. Didn’t seem like he was going to be gung-ho and go out to make a name for himself. And that’s really kind of the type of police chief that I had hoped we would have here in Clever.’

Adding, ‘I just hate the fact that now we will have to be looking again, and we’ll be looking for someone and we don’t know what their personality is or how good they’ll be.’

The Clever Police Department is small with a limited number of officers on duty. Gardner says during Evans’ time as chief she saw a larger presence from the department in the community.

‘I had seen an increase in activity it seemed like since he had come on the force, I had seen more men on the job.’ Gardner said.

Before taking on his new role, the former Clever Police Chief spent 22 years with the Springfield Police Department before retiring in 2021.

Evans remains in the Greene County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

No word yet on who the new Clever police chief will be and how officials will go about vetting their new hire.

Clever is a tiny town of about 2,100 residents in southwestern Missouri, just outside Springfield.
