A New England husband and father is alleged to have shot dead his wife and adult daughter in Bath, Maine at the family residence before fleeing the scene and shortly after killing himself.
Lisa Bailey, 58, and her daughter Jennifer Bailey, 32, were shot and killed Sunday morning, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a press release.
Michael Bailey, 66, described as the suspect was Lisa’s husband and Jennifer’s father, the release stated.
No known motive
Police responded to 10 Crawford Drive in Bath shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday for reports of a shooting. Officers found two women suffering from gunshot wounds, the release said. First responders tried life-saving measures, but both women died at the scene, officials said.
The suspect fled the scene, and the Maine State Police Tactical Team located Michael Bailey dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the home.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform autopsies on the three deceased who died in the suspected double murder-suicide.
The incident left locals in the normally peaceful neighborhood reeling, with neighbors initially placed in a stay at home shelter before the order shortly after being lifted, WABI reported.
‘Today was obviously a surprise and a shock to a lot of people,’ said Bath police Chief Andrew Booth. ‘A lot of people are having a hard time kind of grasping what happened. We’ve been in touch with all the neighbors here, and the community in general, to reassure them that everything is safe at this point.’
No motive was immediately known.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Bath Police Department are investigating the incident, piecing together a timeline of events.
