A Turkish TikTok influencer has dies after plunging to her purported suicide death from a luxury apartment in Istanbul’s exclusive Sultanbeyli district.
Kubra Akyutm, who became famous for her ‘Wedding without a Groom’ video, died earlier this week following a final social media post bemoaning her struggles with her weight.
The social media influencer’s death took place on September 23 with authorities now investigating, with some wondering if Akytum’s death was an accident or indeed intentional or perhaps even the result of something more sinister according to local media.
‘I couldn’t be good to myself’
Investigators told of finding a suicide note at the influencer’s residence.
Just hours prior to her death, Akyutm also left a seemingly desperate post on social media reflecting on her ongoing weight loss.
Wrote Akyutm: ‘I’ve gathered my energy, but I can’t seem to gain weight. I lose a kilogram every day. I don’t know what to do; I urgently need to gain weight.’
Continued the post: ‘I jumped of my own free will. Because I don’t want to live anymore. Take good care of Fistik. I was good to everyone in my life, but I couldn’t be good to myself. Living as a good person gave me nothing. In this life, be selfish. That way, you will be happy. I’ve been struggling for days, but no one noticed. I’m leaving because I love myself and want to think about myself for once. I’m sorry. Kubra Aykut. How surprised are you now, right? My phone password: 145723.’
Her message raised alarm among her followers and highlighted her ongoing struggle with health issues. In a video posted around the same time, Akyutm appeared to be cleaning her home, which added to the mystery surrounding her sudden death.
In one of her recent Instagram videos the influencer said she felt very weak due to rapidly losing weight in the last month and had asked for help from her friends.
Rise to fame
At the time of her death, Aykut had one million followers on TikTok and 207,000 followers on Instagram.
She shot to fame on the social media platform after she held her own wedding without a partner in 2023.
The video showed her wearing a white dress and tiara for the ceremony, while munching on a burger, in which she ‘married’ herself, declaring: ‘I cannot find a worthy groom for myself.’
Video shows her driving off in a car adorned with flowers, holding her bouquet out the window and shouting gleefully.
In the days since her death, Aykut’s body was taken for a post-mortem at a private hospital.
Her body was then taken back to her hometown of Bursa, where her parents live and she was born, to be buried at a funeral attended by friends and loved ones.
