Olivia Bright, East Toledo, Ohio teen electrocuted to death in freak accident stepping into camper at family’s yard while barefoot.
An Ohio teenager has died in a ‘freak accident’ after she stepped outside her home in bare feet and was electrocuted and going into cardiac arrest.
First responders say Olivia Bright, 17, was electrocuted while stepping into a camper in the yard near her family’s East Toledo home on Sunday at around 9pm.
Firefighters blamed faulty wiring in an empty lot outside her home as well as a recent storm which caused the yard to be wet, according to WTOL.
Toledo mom searching for answers
Water is a conductor of electricity, and it’s suggested Olivia could have stepped in a live puddle, although investigations are ongoing.
Olivia was transported to a local hospital with burns on her right hand. She was later pronounced dead.
The girl’s mother has since expressed doubts about her teenage daughter’s actual cause of death.
‘All I know is that Toledo Edison cleared my power, they cleared my electrical,’ Kimberly Bright, told 13 ABC.
She also noted that police did not find any charring on the door of the camper, which was unplugged.
The family now awaits coroner’s report for an official cause of death.
‘All I want to know is how my daughter passed – that’s the answers I want,’ Kimberly said.
Family tragedy follows previous tragedy
Olivia’s family described her as a bit of a handful, but overall a good kid who was outspoken, loved music – especially Carrie Underwood – and was well-loved.
Olivia’s death comes five years after her younger brother dying of cancer.
‘It’s hard,’ Kimberly said of her daughter’s passing. ‘Five-and-a-half years ago, I buried my son Brandon. He was the age 11. He died of glioblastoma.
‘Now I have to go and make arrangements for my daughter Olivia.’
An online fundraiser has been set up to help the family with the funeral arrangements, noting: ‘This is extremely hard for our family because we have lost her brother at age 11 in 2019 due to brain cancer.’
The Bright family is hosting a candlelit vigil for Olivia on Wednesday at 821 Oak Street in Toledo at 9:40 p.m., her time of death.
The family also created a GoFundMe for funeral expenses.
