Define freak accident? A pregnant woman and her unborn baby were killed, after the truck she was riding in collided with an alligator as the reptile was making its way along a Texas road.

Gabrielle Breaux, 33, of Louisiana was seven months pregnant when the truck she was driving crashed on State Highway 35 near Corpus Christi early Sunday morning, authorities told STexasNews.

Breaux was pronounced dead shortly after. Her unborn baby — as well as the alligator — also died in the crash. The tragedy unfolded as Breaux was returning from Texas to her home in New Iberia, Louisiana, 20 miles south of Lafayette just on 4 a.m.

At some point Breaux’s truck plowed into the gator as the predator was crawling across the highway, the Refugio County Sheriff’s Office said.

The truck, which was also carrying another adult and three kids, rolled into a field just off the roadside. The adult was identified as the pregnant woman’s father, Gregory Gerard, 58, along with her three children aged 13, 11 and six.

Predator reptiles in search of body of water

Images shared by Texas authorities showed the dead reptile splayed out across the road.

Breaux and the four others inside the vehicle were rushed to nearby hospitals where she was pronounced dead.

The others were all expected to survive, authorities said.

Jared Lewis, a game warden in Victoria County, told Victoria Advocate that alligator sightings on roads may happen because the animal is looking for a body of water.

Lewis, who has experience catching and relocating alligators found on roads said the county game warden or sheriff’s office should be contacted when an alligator is found.
